General
Became the seat of Panola ( an American Indian
word for cotton ) County in 1848 when 100 acres were donated
for a Townsite. Today, Carthage is a center for gas and oil
processing, petrochemicals, lumber mills, chicken processing,
and several small industries. Carthage is the birthplace of
Tex Ritter and Jim Reeves.

North Shelby Street ; open Tuesday & Wednesday 10 a.m. 3

Reeves Memorial
A Life sized Statue of famous
native Jim Reeves. One of Americas best
loved Country and Western singers. Reeves was killed in a
plane crash in 1964. Reeves has sold millions of albums and
is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. The memorial
is located three miles from centrall downtown on U.S. 79.
Tex Ritter Museum
This Memorial features unique
memorabilia of this legendary Country / Western Entertainer
who was a member of the Grand Old Opry at a young age he
later was inducted into the Coiuntry Music Hall of Fame. For
