Settled about 1840 in the
rugged hills of north Uvalde County, supposedly named for
"coon can," a Mexican qambling game. On U.S. 83
in scenic Frio River Canyon, an area of numerous dude
ranches and resort camps.
Garner State Recreation
Park-
1,420 acres on the
Frio River, an exceptionally scenic Hill Country area;
long a very popular family-oriented recreational park.
Accommodations for 2 to 6 people in comfortable stone and
timber cabins. Camping area provides shaded sites for
tents, trailers and screened shelters. Rest rooms with
showers, grocery store for supplies. Other facilities
include snack bar and restaurant in summer season, pedal
boats, miniature golf course, swimming, fishing, boating,
hiking, and nature study. Located 10 miles north of
Concan (31 miles north of Uvalde) off U.S. 83 on Park Rd.

along U.S. 83, F.M. 1050 and Texas 127 -all routes offer
exceptional scenery.
