With the protection of five surrounding hills, and the
abundance of spring water (some of which was said to have
a copper taste), the site became a stopping point as
drovers brought their herds to the Chisholm
Trail. The
small town that grew there remained a small farming and
ranching community until 1942 when Camp Hood (later,
Fort Hood) was established at the eastern edge of town, and
Copperas Cove soon became the largest city in Coryell
County. Home to Central Texas
College.
