General-
Flatonia, is an agricultural
village located just off the I-10 half way between Houston and San Antonio,
founded by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1873. Contary to popular belief,
Flatonia's name does NOT stem from its topography, but
rather after a pioneer merchant, F. W. Flato.
Waves of immigrants -- English, German,
Bohemian, Czech, and Italian, -- settled in and around Flatonia. Town
most prominently celebrates colorful Czech traditions;
for example, calling their annual (October) chili
festival Czhilispiel. Local sausages and kotaches
are popular. The Local Flatonia Argus,is the
weekly newspaper. Office is at 214 Penn St., dates from
1875.
