General-
Founded in 1834 at the site of the Mission Nuestra Senora del
Refugio (pronounced Re-FURy-o). Relocated here from the swamps of Calhoon County in
1795. Town today is the seat of Refugio County and a commercial center for
oil-producing, ranching, and farming. Public parks offer picnicking, playgrounds,
tennis courts, and a municipal swimming pool. Fishing and water sports available on
nearby coastal bays. Hunters seek migratory waterfowl, deer, wild turkey, and wild
boar.
Refugio County Museum-
Includes local and pioneer history and the bell from the original
mission. Also exhibits of science, art, archeology and prehistory. Open Monday
9 a.m. - 1 p.m.; Tuesday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Saturday 1 - 5 p.m. at 102 West Street.
