A store established
in a dugout to accommodate buffalo hunters was the
beginning of this city in 1877. Today Sweetwater is the
seat of Nolan County and is the banking and
commercial center as well. Industrial firms include
gypsum plants, cement plants, cottonseed oil mill, and
garment manufacturer. The Sweetwater Commercial Historic
District, which is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places, includes more than 90 sites representing
architectural styles from the 1900s - 1930s. Sweetwater
lies on U.S. 84, a segment of the Ports to Plains Highway
connecting the state's heartland to coastal ports.

Courthouse-
 A
memorial marker inside the courthouse honors the brave
women who trained at Avenger feild in Sweetwater during
WWII in the Women's Airforce Service Pilots program. On
dispaly is Walt Disney's Fifnella the mascot of these women. The old
training site is now the Texas State Technical College.

Coliseum Complex-
The host of many
activities: including, rodeos, team roping, livestock
shows, and the worlds largest rattlesnake round up every march.

Museum-
More than a dozen
display rooms depict the lives of early Nolan County
settlers. Extensive photograph files, farm and ranch
exhibits, Indian artifacts. Open Tues. - Sat. 2 - 5 p.m.
