General-
Originally a stop in the old San Antonio road, this
town is now a tomato growing center in the redland belt. The Name Alto derives from the
Spanish word for "high" (it is the highest point between Angeline and Neches
Rivers).
The grave of Helena Kimble Dill, believed to be the
mother of the first anglo child born in Texas (1804) is located here. (Jane Long, of
Gavelston os often credited as the Mother of Texas' first anglo child in 1821) Contact the

Per person tour fees apply. Adult, student, and senior citizen fees; group tour rates available. Group tours are offered by appointment only. Facilities include headquarters/interpretive center, an archeological experiment exhibit, a .7-mile interpretive trail, and a Texas State Parks Store. Day-use only - no picnicking.

Exceptional scenery, of forested hills and streams lies. Along U.S.
69, Texas 21 (El Camino Real), and numerous local roads round Alto.
