This city grew from early settlements dating back to the Juan de Onate Expedition in 1598 and a settlement by Juan Maria Ponce de Leon in 1827, although the area missions predate that civil settlement by 150 years! The largest U.S. city on the Mexican border The neighboring Juarez (mexco) is coincidentally their largest border city as well. The two combined populations total an astounding 1,800,000!!! El Paso is located in an ancient mountain pass from which the name derived. Surrounded by mile high peaks , superb climate, and its proximity to mexico make El Paso one of Texa's most popular tourist areas.

Magoffin Home State Historic Structure
This homestead was built in 1868 was destroyed in a flood a replica was built in 1875. Served as a political center for Magoffinsville community which later became El Paso. 1120 Magoffin St.

Sierra de Cristo Rey
The mountain of Christ the king looms above El Paso at the point where the territories of Texas, Mexico, and New Mexico meet. Prominent on the 4,576 foot summit is a massive monument of Jesus Christ. Warning the climb is difficult and is recommended to be done in groups.

Tigua Indian Reservation: Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Established in 1681 by refugees from a bloody American Indian uprising that expelled Spanish and Christian Indians from present New Mexico. 119 Old Pueblo Rd. from I-10 East.
